Kelwerk
Computer vision for textile quality control

Textile testing, measured by vision.

Kelwerk builds computer-vision tools for textile quality control. We take the slow, error-prone eye-work out of thread counting, make yarn-count and GSM checks simpler, and are bringing twist and fibre-composition tests to the phone next. Every result shows its work, so anyone can verify it.

Why we exist

Fabric testing still relies on tired eyes and special tools

01

A pick glass and a needle

Counting threads by hand takes minutes per direction, and two checkers rarely get the same number on the same fabric.

02

A cutter and a balance

Every GSM test needs a perfectly cut sample from a GSM cutter before it can even be weighed.

03

Slow lab routines

Twist and fibre-composition checks are manual and slow.

Kelwerk's tools do the looking for you, and they show their work: every thread they count and every outline they measure is drawn on the photo.

Available now

What you can measure today

Thread density (EPI / PPI)

Counts every warp end and weft pick in a woven fabric from one photo, including polyester satin, and marks each thread it counted.

Yarn count

Estimates or verifies cotton (Ne), linen (lea), worsted, metric (Nm), tex and denier counts from thread density and GSM.

GSM without a cutter

Measures the exact area of any cut piece from a photo. Add its weight from your balance and get the GSM, with far less dependence on a GSM cutter.

What we're building next

The next tests we're bringing to your phone

Our research pipeline targets the textile tests that still take the longest by hand.

01In development

Twist per inch (TPI)

Yarn twist measured from images, without the untwist-and-count routine.

02In development

Composition assistant

Cuts the time needed to estimate cotton and linen composition.

03In development

Mixed yarn counts

Separate warp and weft counts, even when they differ in count and in fibre.

04In development

Knitted fabrics

Wales and courses per inch (WPI / CPI) for knitted fabrics.

Timing may change while these are in development.

Polyester satin, the fabric a pick glass can't handle

Dense filament yarns, a high sheen and long floats that hide the interlacings make satin and sateen the hardest fabrics to count by eye. WeaveMetric Studio has a dedicated satin method that reads the weave itself, then counts and marks every end and pick.

Reads the weave
Finds the floats and the ends per repeat, and shows a weave diagram you can check.
Proof on the photo
Every counted end and pick is marked, so the result can be checked at a glance.

How it works

Three steps, then results in seconds

01

Calibrate once

Print our chessboard sheet and follow the guided steps. It's a one-time job per phone.

02

Photograph

Hold the phone over the fabric, ideally on a stand, and take the photo.

03

Read and review

Get the result with every counted thread marked. Adjust, recount a chosen area, or save it.

How we build

Results you can trust, from the phone in your pocket

Every result shows its work

Threads are marked and numbered, and GSM samples are outlined, so a supervisor can verify any number later.

Real-world scale from a phone

A one-time calibration with a printed sheet corrects your camera's lens distortion and lets the app work out how far away the fabric is. No special hardware.

Your results stay on your phone

Photos go to our servers only to be analysed and are then deleted. Analysed images and results are saved only on your phone, never on our servers.

Who we serve

Made for the textile shop floor

Dyeing and processing mills

Compare grey and finished fabric to check shrinkage, without sending samples out.

Weaving mills

Check construction quickly, at production and at dispatch.

Exporters and buying houses

Verify incoming fabric against the order.

Labs and fabric traders

Fast first checks with a visual record.

See it on your own fabric

We'll demonstrate on your samples. Tell us what you test and pick a date.
